This is how the rapid antigen test works

In our rapid antigen test, a sample is taken from the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. This is done by swabbing the pharyngeal wall and the nasopharynx. Through the experience of our medically trained staff, this is done quickly and thoroughly. 20 minutes later, you will receive the test result by email.

Rapid antigen tests work similarly to pregnancy tests in that they detect the protein structures of SARS-CoV-2. For this purpose, the collected nasopharyngeal sample is introduced into a buffer solution and placed on a test strip. If the sample contains the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the test strip reacts with the protein components of the virus. If the test strip changes colour, it is concluded that the test is positive.

This rapid, uncomplicated method of testing makes it possible to test many people at low cost – with efficiency. Group testing and testing before events help to identify infected people without symptoms and people with high viral loads at an early stage, and to break chains of infection. In addition, the ease of use of the tests allows them to be evaluated outside a laboratory, which not only makes them less expensive, but also saves waiting times and frees up laboratory capacity for PCR testing.

What is antigen testing?

Antigen tests detecting the protein structures of SARS-CoV-2 work similarly to pregnancy tests. A sample taken with a nose and throat swab is applied to the test strip. If the SARS-CoV-2 virus is detectable in the sample, the protein components of the virus react with the test strip, causing a change in color. Advantages of the antigen tests is that they are low in price and the results are ready within 20 minutes. The easy handling of point-of-care (PoC) antigen tests allows for testing outside of a laboratory, for instance in care facilities, medical facilities, or doctor’s offices without a diagnostic laboratory. Here, a PoC antigen tests can help to identify asymptomatic, possibly infectious persons and to limit the spread of the virus through suitable measures such as temporary self-isolation. When and why should I get tested?

The best way to prevent transmission of COVID-19 is to protect yourself and others from infection. It is essential to observe hygiene etiquette rules and practice social distancing. Before interacting with others (e.g., at a family reunion or a meeting with friends, a visit in a hospital or in a nursing home or before returning to the office), or if you think you might have contracted the disease, a test for infection will provide additional safety.

If you want to shorten your quarantine period after having returned from a high-risk area, you can now (starting December 1, 2020) do so with an appropriate test. This has been agreed upon by federal and state (Länder) governments. (source:

Additionally, due to the current situation, some countries require antigen tests or even PCR tests for entry. Information on when and how you need to get tested can be found on the website of the Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt) under ‘Sicher reisen’.

What happens if the test is positive?

Being infected carries the risk of spreading the disease to others. If your test result is positive, immediate quarantine and initiation of the measures defined by the Robert-Koch-Institute in collaboration with the local Health Authorities (Gesundheitsamt) are mandatory. Additionally you should do a PCR test after receiving a positive antigen rapid test result. If the test is positive, you will receive information on what to do next.

Because COVID-19 is a reportable disease under German law, we are obligated to notify the local Health Authorities and initiate further procedures. Your local Health Authorities’ contact information can be found here:
